Paperboy Goes International

Y Books are delighted to announce that they have sold international publishing rights for Paperboy by Tony Macaulay to Harper Collins
This major publishing deal was brokered by Prizeman & Kinsella Literary Agency and comes on the back of the sale of the film rights to Titian Red Pictures. Harper Collins plan to release the new edition in November 2011 in the UK and Australia.
Chenile Keogh, Managing Director/Publisher at Y Books said: ‘We are thrilled that Paperboy will now be brought to an international audience. We knew that this was special book from the moment we read it. We are sure that Harper Collins will do a fantastic job and that Tony will become a household name both at home and abroad.’
It’s Belfast, 1975, and a twelve-year-old boy wearing Brut aftershave has just been appointed Paperboy to the Upper Shankill by Oul’ Mac.
The smell of Tayto Cheese & Onion crisps is on his breath, and the aroma of fresh fish suppers and burning double-decker buses is in the air. It is the era of platform shoes and parallel trousers, and Paperboy is taking guitar lessons with Mr Rowing so he can play along to the Bay City Rollers.
Belfast in the seventies is like the newspapers he delivers: everything is black and white, albeit Orange and Green. There are bombings and killings on the evening news, but Paperboy is more interested in Doctor Who and Top of the Pops, bonfires and outer space, and of course, Sharon Burgess. It is a time of hate and conflict, but Paperboy’s only battles are with acne, dentistry and the wee hoods out to rob his paper money. The streets are ruled by the IRA and the UDA but Paperboy is under the spell of a less threatening acronym: ABBA. There are secrets at school and dangers on the streets, but Paperboy is happy, so he is. He is a good paperboy. He delivers.
This beguiling memoir will charm the socks off you and frequently make you laugh out loud.
About the author: Tony Macaulay grew up in the 1970s at the top of the Shankill Road in Belfast, an experience that has shaped his life and inspired his writing. Following a successful career as a paperboy, he has gone on to spend over 25 years working for peace and reconciliation both in Northern Ireland and abroad. He is Managing Director of Macaulay Associates, specialising in community development and conflict resolution. Tony is also a writer and broadcaster and has been a regular contributor to BBC Radio Ulster for ten years. He lives in Portstewart with his wife, Lesley, and their two daughters.

Paperboy is going to the movies!

Merlin Publishing are delighted to announce that the film rights for Paperboy by Tony Macaulay have been snapped up by the award-winning production company Titian Red Pictures (Song for a Raggy Boy) days before the official publication date.

‘Paperboy is a charming and funny story with a very positive spin on the 1970′s (and great music) in Northern Ireland and we know that we can capture the essence of the book and make it into an international feature film.’ Kevin Byron-Murphy, Producer, Titian Red Pictures.

At present Titian Red Pictures are working on Reconstruction of Warriors, a World War II drama in the vein of The English Patient meets Band of Brothers, based on the book by Emily Mayhew.  The film will be directed by Lajos Koltai. Lajos directed Fateless (2005) and Evening (2007) featuring Meryl Streep, Glen Close, Toni Colette, Claire Danes and Vanessa Redgrave.  He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for Malena in 2000.  Ashley Judd and Topher Grace are already attached to star in Reconstruction of Warriors and negotiations are in progress with a major Hollywood star to play the main character. The film will be shot at the end of the year.

‘From the moment we signed Paperboy we knew that it was destined for international success. It is a very special book that is both touching and hilarious and we are delighted that Tony’s exceptional talent has been recognised by such a prestigious production company.’ Chenile Keogh, Managing Director/Publisher, Merlin Publishing.

Paperboy by Tony Macaulay is available in all good bookstores. Tony Macaulay is available for interview.
